Your tackle box should contain the most essential of all lures – an Ice Fishing Jig. The proper jigging method for freshwater fish needs to be understood if you are going to catch some big fish situated in the northern lakes. If your jigging is all wrong you can expect little or no bites of fish, even if the area is busy.
When you use an Ice Fishing Jig an important thing to remember is that success all comes down to the movement of the lure, what bait you use on the jig and also the action you to use to attract fish to bite. Although it is optional, most ice fishermen like to use bait of one kind or another be it bait, larva, a maggot, prescented plastic bait or if there is no live bait available using bits of fresh or frozen minnow which works well.
Finding out the best jig action for attracting the fish is the next step. The Ice Fishing Jigs were designed particularly to imitate the movement of bait fish as it moves up and down in the water, around the level where fish are feeding. If you have a depth finder or a fish locator these will help you set the jig at the correct distance from the bottom up. You should then bounce the jig one or two feet off the bottom, pausing for about twenty to thirty seconds, then jig again. You should try different jigging rhythms until you find one that works, and then the fish will start feeding.
Another method for using the jig is “thrumming” where you move it side to side. You rapidly move the rod tip back and forth so that the jig moves horizontally. The lure will move about one to three inches sideways whilst at the same time bobbing up and down. For this motion, the ice fishing jigs that work best are contoured type or the hard bodied jigs with a baited hook.
To get depth control of jigs, using bobbers are very effective. If you have already landed a fish or got one to bite at a certain depth, you can then jig either side from before for about one or two feet so get maximum coverage of the area. You must stay with the allowance given for the number of lines on the body of water where you are fishing. There are distance regulations that you must follow if you are using tip-ups. Fishing regulations mostly specify that all your tip-ups must be in a clear line of vision for you to see them in the water.

rm instead of putting on a single bulky bit of clothing. The layers will help to insulate the heat within and keep you warmer. The layer closest to you will be to keep the body dry, the next one is to withhold the heat and is like insulation and the next one is to resist the outside elements like the moisture and the wind. The different layers of fishing gear for ice fishing is essential to prevent the body temperature from plunging too low and causing hypothermia which could be dangerous. This could set in because of the long hours spent on icy locations.
No doubt you will have a tent or shanty for protection, but never the less it is better to go fully prepared just in case there is a blizzard or any such emergency and you cannot get back to the vehicle or the shore.
Ice fishing gear which is an absolute must:
1. Under layer that is moisture wicking – you can get the moisture wicking gear from any sports store which sells them for wearing after a work out at the gym and are just as suitable for wearing when you are out ice fishing too. The fabric which is polypropylene in fact draws the dampness away from the skin, and prevents dampness which is often there with cotton clothes. If your skin gets damp you will feel much more cold and uncomfortable and there are chances of falling ill too.
2. The insulating layer – many of the older fabrics work well as an insulating layer as part of your ice fishing gear. You could use fleece, wool or down for this heat holding layer. However, if you use fleece or wool you would need something with a blend of nylon to protect you from the moisture and wind that could get in through these fabrics. The modern micro fiber is very popular as it is both warm and lightweight, and water resistant above all.
3. The layer to protect you from wind and water – you could use leather or nylon as the outer shell for preventing the moisture or the wind from getting to you. Nylon is also very light and easy to carry with you and you could take along an extra piece too if required, as an emergency gear. These nylon windbreakers easily fold into a pouch and are easy to pack and carry along with you.
4. Protection for you feet – you should opt for boots that are rubberized and water proof and have a felt liner which you could remove. This along with socks that are moisture wicking are a great protection against the moisture and also keeps your feet warm. You could have an extra pair of these felt liners in case your feet get too moist.
You could also carry along with you scarves, goggles, woolen hats with ear miffs and face-masks to keep your head warm and dry. For your hands to be kept warm you should have gloves, mitts, gloves and hand warmer packets which are a must for your gear when you are fishing in the ice.

In ever increasing numbers, fishermen from the novice to the experienced are finding the excitement and adventure of deep-sea fishing easily available in the waters off Sea Isle, New Jersey. With almost year-round fishing opportunities, it remains to simply choose the best time to book a boat or charter. Because of the unique cross flows of the Delaware River, the Hudson River, and the Gulf Stream, a nice variety of fish are attracted to this area. Closer in to shore, you can catch blue fish, striped bass, fluke, and weakfish, to name a few, and there are those who choose to surf fish right from the shore lines of selected beaches.
If you really want the opportunity to be out on the water and go where the bigger boys are, you’ll want to connect with one of the many fishing boats for hire. You can book 1/2 day, 3/4 day, all day or 23 hour night time trips, depending on what you are hoping to catch and how far you are willing to travel. For many fishermen, the excursion is its own reward. For others, the opportunity to do battle with a giant tuna, a swordfish, or mahi-mahi is a challenge like no other.
Families with children can enjoy and afford ocean fishing. As fishermen know, landing a big fish isn’t always about size and strength as much as it is skill and technique. Bluefish usually run up to about 15 pounds, but they do not give in easily. Caught by jigging (dropping un-baited hook and reeling in as fast as possible) or by bait fishing, they will keep even an experienced angler busy. Practiced, professional crews will assist with all aspects, including cleaning and filleting. Bring your own food, beverages, suntan lotion, and of course, a camera to show you with your trophies. You may also want to bring a cooler to store fish that you plan to bring home for a tasty fish fry.
Are you looking for a little more excitement? How about heading out to sea in the late afternoon, catching a few winks in the clean, air-conditioned bunkrooms, and then, sometime around midnight, rising to wage war with the bigger warriors of the deep. In the fall, tuna runs can produce fish anywhere from 25 lbs – 100+ lbs. A tuna is an amazing, unrelenting fighter. It will definitely give you an experience you will always remember. In addition, swordfish have been brought in weighing up to 250 lbs as well as the great tasting mahi-mahi that weighs in at about 20 lbs.
Your fishing experience will last through the night hours until dawn. Coming back to shore is a leisurely boat ride, savoring the recent evening adventures. Be sure to bring a blanket or sleeping bag and pillow. Fishing equipment is rented and bait is provided. Whether you want a family vacation or a weekend away with the guys, deep sea fishing off Sea Isle, New Jersey will offer a unique experience you will remember for years to come.
